I really appreciate your input and thoughts - I can definitely see where you're coming from and I appreciate the fact that you came here to bring it up with me! I have this post up for just this reason. :)
I will say that his irritation with Karkat is less truly caliginous and more "they kissed and it was nice but Karkat pushes all the wrong buttons with him". John's heteronormativity is something that I could probably argue, if only because he's 13 and many people don't know how they actually stand at 13, but he and Karkat don't and won't have any sort of proper blackmance, if that helps assuage you at all. John's just a dumb 13-year-old kid who made out some irritation and one mistletoe-induced kiss out to be more than it was.
As for the rest of it... well, thank you for being honest! I can see where you're coming from, and for what it's worth, he's lining up more with canon John and becoming more confident in himself, though there's been little opportunity to show it given my recent sort of AWOLness, heh. He's not as outspoken, but he's definitely feeling more comfortable with himself. It's not my best AU, I'll definitely admit that, but I'm doing my best.

Aaaah, yeah, I actually got crit on that before we made the move from LJ and did try to pull back on that as a result - which doesn't really show 'cause that's around the time I started being a little scarce, haha. It's a legit point, and I kind of sheepishly went "wow, wtf, self" after it was pointed out.
Thank you for the compliment, though! Yeah, John is like... trying to take charge kind of awkwardly, but he is determined to do his best, if only because Vriska and Dave are both his friends and he wants to help make sure their hatemance isn't fucked up by TZ instigating things and Vriska not having the willpower to not engage on her own.
But yeah, doing AUs well is hard. ;_; Seriously though, anon, you are my new favourite - you have combined thoughtful and gentle critique with pointing out good things and dorkitude and basically this is how concrit should work all the time for everyone.
